My first writer client was a man we called “Mule Writer” and he wrote nostalgia. He wrote the kind of stories your daddy always told when you sat down to dinner. More often than not, his stories had a purpose, taught a lesson, or gave you a giggle. And he wrote a whole book of these stories.
But before they were published, he spent a lot of time in my ACE Writers Group, editing, learning, teaching, and following my directives to get his book published. I thought it was pretty awesome, because he was much older than me, far smarter than me, and way more published than me, when he started attending the course. But he didn’t know that, because I didn’t tell him. (I’m sure he thought it occasionally, but he never said it out loud.)
But then he published his book, and he needed my expertise again… Not as a writer, but as a marketer, as a web designer, and as a publicist. I jumped at the opportunity and spent many hours working with him to sell his book. I don’t know how many he sold ultimately, but a good number of books.
At one point, I remember saying to him – the average book never sells a hundred copies. He said, “I’m above average.”
Then we were discussing a publication where the author mentioned that most authors feel successful when their books sell 500 copies. He laughed and said, “I’m successful.”
He was past 75 when he published that book. You don’t have to wait that long. You can always slap the donkey out of the way and publish your book NOW. Let’s do this!
